Laundry Detergent – Detox Your Life Workshop – ESPANOL

Como estas? This is clip from a recent Detox Your Life workshop in Bogota Colombia. (Description in English below this video).

If your Spanish is John Cleese, Fawlty Towers impressive, know that I’m talking about sleep, and how we do it for many many hours in our life time, 1000’s of hours, actually years! During those years we are constantly breathing and absorbing through your skin whatever it is you wash your bedding with.

Th example I give is of my amazing mum’s neighbor who was getting sicker and sicker, with respiratory problems and a nasty cough. I instantly recommended to my mum that it could be linked to her laundry detergent, or at least that the laundry detergent was NOT helping matters. Mum, as mothers often do, pretty much dismissed my tip at the time, only to call me a few months later telling her neighbor is much much healthier now because she switched out her laundry detergent for a natural, plant based detergent.

Her original reasoning was that companies making the laundry detergents wouldn’t legally be aloud to used ingredients that were harmful to humans… really?

The thing is maybe today you’re fine, maybe in a year or so you’re fine, but down the line, decades of sleeping with chemicals later, surely it’s better to just do the common sense thing and switch to a natural plant based biodegradable laundry detergent?

AND, this is without even touching on the environmental benefits of using plant based, biodegradable laundry detergents. Awesome. I leave it up to you…

7 (not so dumb) Health Tips for Christmas & 2016

This is NOT a bunch of dumb dieting health tips for Christmas & 2016

These health tips can be used any time, any day, any month, any year.

But, the thing with this list, as with ALL health advice – IT DEPENDS.

Found the latest fat burning health food?  That’s interesting… but I don’t really care and neither should you because IT DEPENDS.  Your mate just told you about the ketogenic diet or they stopped eating potato skins and their fingernails doubled in strength?  That’s interesting too, but I don’t really care about that either and neither should you because IT DEPENDS.

You are different. 

You are a unique expression of a human being and their diet or superfood might just be your kryptonite, or not, it depends.  Get the picture 🙂 ?  Your lifestyle, family, friends, city, mountain, village, sleep pattern, the season, your constitution and a billion other things… all make your answer to all general health advice – “well, that depends, surely?”

Ready for it? (Remember this list also DEPENDS).

Health Tip 1) Intermittent fasting (I.F)?

Just like gravity always did and probably always will – I.F still works.  It works because fasting is not some dumb dieting trick – it’s a normal thing for humans to do – not eating for a period of time is OK.  Thousands of years ago, even 50 to 100 years ago, food was not ALWAYS around and available and snacking (one of the dumbest things to do if you’re looking to burn fat) wasn’t really done.

The reason intermittent fasting is worth playing with this holiday (DEPENDING) is because it gives your organs a few extra hours to deal with nasty foods it has to clean out.  The time not eating also helps promote health hormonal balance in your body.

The basic principle of IFing is don’t eat for 16 hours of the 24 in a day. Easy right?  Then if you want to supercharge it – make your first meal high-ish in protein.  Click here for a really long and detailed post about it.

Health Tip 2)  Bicarbonate of Soda / Sodium Bicarbonate

(with lemon for antioxidants) is a quick fix for acid reflux.  Really that shit is a literally saving lives.  Don’t tolerate acid after indulgence – fix it.  If the acid goes on for more than a day or so it’s worth checking in with your doc or ‘checking in’ with your thinking and food – something is not agreeing with you.  The reason for doing it yourself is because commercial anti-acids are often full of unnecessary added ingredients.

It’s not my recipe but some say 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda + 1/2 glass of water is the way forward.  (The ‘Home Remedies’ link at the bottom of this page has a nice list of ways to use it).

PS.  If you don’t get acid reflux someone by you probably does so pass the tip on, you will make someones day!!  Literally transforming their week!

PPS. This is just a short term fix,not a long term health strategy.  See your doctor, TCM doctor or health practitioner.

PPPS. Getting more alkaline foods in your mouth, giving yourself a good 3 hours between your last meal and sleep could be your longer term strategy for sorting acid reflux.  If the problem persists see your doctor.

Health Tip 3) Meditate or find something to do on your own.

(without mixing your ‘energy’ with anyone else).

I like to drink a tea, practice drumming or stick patterns, train, walk, or a vipassana style meditation.  Lovely…

This will give you a minute to settle your mind and to help you not react to family pressures.

By giving yourself a few minutes on your own, 15+ mins is good, you can find space in your mind and energy to give compassion to whoever or whatever it is that’s annoying you.  The deeper level of pain, confrontation, anger, annoyance within a family setting is a deeper unconscious pain that ‘wants’ to come to the surface.  The goal is to not react.  Go to you tube and check out Eckhart Tolle’s ‘Pain Body’ for more on that.  It’s a life enhancing perspective/metaphor.

Health Tip 4) Aim for more nutrients per calorie. 

BORING right… and it works. But this also depends. 

If you’re still counting calories please give release yourself of that boring pointless restrictive way of eating.  Find a way to tune in to how you feel.  There is this magical feeling when you let go of all that head work around food and actually get in touch with how it feels to be eating right for your body.

The first step here is to know that a calorie doesn’t equal a calorie – i.e 200 calories of sausage on a stick probably has more nutrients than 200 calories of ‘chocolate mouse light’.  The mouse light is probably full of artificial sweeteners BUT the sausage probably came from a pig that was pumped full of hormones and plumped up on GMO feed.  My advice there is buy at least organic and grassfed, avoid the word ‘light’ at all costs and if you’re not into eating animals then make sure your vegan way of eating is giving you the nutrients you need too because there are plenty of pointless vegan foods out there 😉

Blending vegetables into a smoothie is an awesome way to get more nutrients in there, especially because you get to keep the fiber!

Health Tip 5) You don’t have to eat shitty food. 

It’s OK to say no.  Just because your family (yes that includes your partner) or friends are smashing a load of cookies and ice cream riddled with artificial nonsense doesn’t mean you have to.  They have their knowledge, wisdom and feeling with food and alcohol and they will be acting from where they are.  Remember it dependsMaybe their body is more adept at digesting that food or booze, maybe they had a MASSIVE workout that day and their body is burning like a steam engine, or maybe they just don’t care that much.

By all means, get involved, give yourself the freedom to eat anything and everything you desire and without the guilt trip because  ‘Mind over matter’ is more powerful than you can imagine.  If you do, the next day can probably be helped by intermittent fasting and baking soda the next day can help your body clear out the junk.

A thought on this mind over matter business… I remember seeing a documentary on centenerians.  They were looking at their health, lifestyle, food, habits and seeing if they could draw any conclusions to reasons for their longevity.  There was a Scottish guy at the end who really struck a chord with me.  He was the mechanic in the village, the only mechanic – he helped everyone.  He also chain smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol every day…  He was living well! But how!?  He was loving life, and everyone in the community needed him to be alive.  “They just wont let me die…” were the words that closed the documentary.  Food for though right?  Thinking about the placebo and nocebo effect (the mind healing or harming an individual) this guy had nailed it.  BUT I suspect that if he nourished his physicla body with local, organic foods he might just be the first human to levitate!

Health Tip 6) Fat – it’s OK to eat it. You know that right?

And this depends too – mainly on how it’s cooked and the source.  But really, you know fat is OK already right?  Sugar, processed foods, stress, a job/life you hate,  is probably what’s messing with you the most – both body and mind.  Zoe Harcombe nails the fat myth here…  Oh noooo but what about cholesterol…. read this by Zoe Harcombe.

When it comes to getting the health benefits of eating fat make sure you get the quality and how/if it is cooked right.

7) You are already AWESOME and do not need a diet plan.

People often think they need to burn fat to become healthy when the opposite is true and feels a millions times better: be healthy both in your body and mind and understand your body’s true needs the fat will drop off…

Why bother sharing this information?

The reason I write these blog posts is because I want more and more people to get this kind of information… as many as possible.   The more high quality, well researched, unbiased and exploratory information on food and health the better. 

The stages of truth in health are very real – why wait until science ‘proves’ something when it has been practiced in real life, without sponsors, for many years.

Too much of the readily available health information is strategically controlled through ‘Astroturfing’, the script is written, all the way from the pharmaceutical industry (who continue to shoot themselves in the foot) to the newspapers (don’t ), the to nestle, herbalife, and most of the other    There is plenty of info like this out there but I guess you’re reading this one.  can be disseminated (nice word right?) that will very soon lead to an un-biased maybe silent investor/sponsor.  Some corporations seem to be very slowly turning their ways around, other ethical companies are popping up all around now, Castle Rock in California are transforming the bottled water industry, Addictive Wellness are nailing it with their chocolate, LivingTea.net are sharing the World’s cleanest tea, the Wellbeingnow Seminar in the UK is bringing together people with powerful messages and Mcroaid International  are just awesome  They’re not paying me to mention them, they deserve it…

David Wolfe on LSD, Resveratrol, Supplements, Sirt 1 Gene

David Wolfe interview behind the scenes and Longevity Now conference in California.

The Longevity Now Conference is where we did the interview… looking forward to this years’!

When I did the interview with David Wolfe I didn’t know too much about him, and in all frankness, I was at the beginning of an exponential curve of learning that proceeded this interview at the Longevity Now Conference in California.

Resveratrol, a natural phenol, is one of the compounds reported to play a role in great longevity and great health… I’m not saying it will or it won’t get you to 150 but it’s an interesting thought to entertain.

Resveratrol, like so many other, ‘alternative health’ foods or supplements gets mixed reviews as to wether it works or not but this is the thing – the experiment, the science that tests the isolate cannot replicate the real life experience of the human consuming it. The science test cannot be a fair one.

Likewise, saying take ‘this’ or ‘that’ supplement and live longer is a fallacy. It MIGHT up you chances, but environment, job and life satisfaction and those thoughts in your mind play an even bigger role…………… And, as your environment changes, so your eating habits should change. The seasons will change.

No Years Resolution – NOT Dieting in 2015

STOP EATING THIS!! STOP THAT!! RESTRICT THIS!! DON’T THAT…

So, resolutions… Really? You’re still making these? Well, I guess there COULD be merit in it but before you consider making a new years resolution have a quick think back to your last to see if that list of stuff you wanted to change is actually any different? And, read on…

Lazy to read all of this post then know this:

– Restricting yourself from something can create a head full of traps. Move towards what you want..

– Ignore the Social Media New Years Resolution hype because you might ‘inherit’ someone else’s problems. Do your thing. If you want to, focus on upgrading the already awesome you…

– When it comes to food, the restriction plan has proven itself useless, even problematic (…decades of fad dieting) time and time again. ‘Move towards nutrient dense foods’ is a full proof basic strategy. With that fine tune your nutrient dense food selection based on how you react to it (energy levels, skin, hair and moods are some of the feedback systems to ‘listen to’).

– Tune in to, respect, and listen to your environment. That is everything in your life. It is speaking to you, you are speaking with it, it affects you and you affect it. I invite you to tune in.

– Restricting others. What!? Yeah, that’s right… Something that any food blogger, nutritionist, trainer, or any human really should consider; is where am I projecting (putting) my own beliefs and restrictions on others. And then considering how offer learnings without inflicting them…

THIS NEXT ONE IS A BEAUTY!!!
– What action does the person you want to become already do? Just do it. By doing the thing that the person you want to become does you instantly become the person you want to become. You’re one and the same. Do it. You ca rinse and repeat this one for a while because it will always apply.

Back to RESTRICTION…
The second you say (or even think) ‘I can’t eat this or that’ you put a trap in your mind. The 7 year old in you rebels with a force stronger than the bowl movements of a lactose intolerant drinking pasteurized fat-free milk (which should be avoided at all costs by the way).
Health should NOT be about mind traps and restriction.
(That’s what our childhood was for, right!?)

Youcan flip it…

Check this example:

Imagine person A wants to lose some weight. They begin the year with a list of all the foods they’re not going to eat. No chocolate, no cake, no fish and chips, no bread, no pasta, no carbs, no sugar…
Now imagine person B takes a different approach. Instead of depriving, taking things away they choose to add green vegetables to their meals, upgrade from grain fed beef to grass fed beef, to eat eggs from free range organic chickens, or to add a green smoothie, or to add 10 minutes to their dog walking, even to find time to go for a walk or even begin some kind of sport or training.

Person B is moving towards nutrient dense foods, saying yes to life (yeah i know it might sound hippie but as you will see in my videos the hippie category so created by man, is absolutely bang on right with most things life). Person B is nourishing their mind, body and energy. Creating something in their life that they can then freely and happily share with others.

Now, with aaaaaaaaaaall of that said…

If you are still hell-bent on making a resolution based on dieting this year, have a read of this so you jump the first hurdle:

Heard someone (maybe you) say this before?

“OH, yeah dude, I know how to lose fat, just train more and eat less…” WRONG (well that depends too really because you will probably lose a bit in the first couple of days BUT know that the ‘eat less, train more’ is severely flawed and almost certainly not sustainable for you and will almost certainly wreak havoc on your hormones doing unnecessary damage)

Train more, eat less is a bit like the finding that smoking cigarettes can temporarily increase your lung capacity, very short term gain for medium to long term damage).
Calories in Calories out? That’s what ‘train more eat less’ is based on really, so yep, calories in calories out is severely flawed too.

Quick 2015 fix for fat burning?
Again this absolutely depends on you, your heart, your lifestyle, motivation, health and physical ability but…

– Sprints (or HIIT) before a protein dominant breakfast is a basic rule of thumb that many experts (including me) use on themselves and with clients.

– Squats. Deep, satisfying squats. Get them in your life for fat burning, strength building, feeling awesome and mobility.

Give yourself freedom from restriction in 2015

So, if you’re going to set yourself any kind of ‘goal’ for 2015 give yourself freedom from restriction. Taking a 180 degree view of your approach to food and health.

Give yourself the gift of moving towards nutrient dense foods while increasing your awareness on how your eating and buying decisions impact you and the environment around you. That is a deeper way to nourish yourself.

Simple when you feel the shift.

Bras and Cream (Behind the Scenes) Sunscreen Interview with Nadine Artemis

Sunscreen is controversial subject only because it has been used for so long without question. Like smoking and tobacco was widely accepted, even encouraged, the safety of sunscreen is being deeply questioned.

The main concerns about sunscreen:

– Some ingredients in most high street sunscreens can become carcinogenic in the sun

– Some sunscreens separate the UVA and UVB rays. This means that your skin doesn’t get burned great – BUT the burning of your skin is a signal to tell you to GET OUT OF THE SUN – you’ve had enough!

– Some Sunscreens just block UVB rays, the UV rays that cause sunburn (the message from your skin). When UVB’s are blocked they are separated from the UVA. To be clear, this means that the UVA still penetrate through. Studies show that UVA rays cause more skin damage. And, because you’re STILL in the sun (because you’re not getting the message from your skin) those UVA rays do their damage for longer.

– Look a little deeper at what this means and we can see that sunscreen is blocking our vitamin D production, because it is the UVB rays that create vitamin D.

– And no, using man-made sunbeds is not a short cut. The intensity makes the dangerous (2, 3)

On top of that, some of the sunscreens (many high street common brands) contain carcinogenic free-radical chemicals, which get baked into our skin when exposed to the sun. Oxybenzone being a main sunscreen issue (1)

Dr Ackerman, founding father of the study of dermatology, author of Sun and the epidemic of Melanoma; Myth on Myth (2008) substantiated that there is no direct link between the sun and melanoma. Helen Saw, published in the medical journal the Lancet, found that indoor workers who are exposed to artificial lighting are more likely to get Melanoma. Staying indoors all day, not being exposed to much sunlight, then going on holiday for a ROASTING is the perfect bad recipe for skin problems.

Lack of sunlight and our cultures lack of vitamin D3 is linked to cancer and that appropriate sun exposure can prevent skin cancer.

The use of some common, household name, high-street sunscreens can lead to the accumulation of toxins in the lipid layer and increase xenoestrogens (1) which imitate estrogen in our bodies, further messing with our hormonal balance….

In the Interview, Nadine goes on to say that; “Yes sunscreen will prevent the sun burn but at what cost? We do want to avoid sunburn but, sunburns are actually easier for our DNA to process than the sun damage of being in the sun with sunscreens”

What’s the solution?

– Natural alternatives to sunscreen include: raspberry seed oil, coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba

– Build protection from the inside a diet rich in foods high in antioxidants. They will help protect and heal from the inside out. Chaga mushroom, acai, beetroot, purple grapes, red grapes, blueberries, lemons (including the skin), spirulina.

– Gradually build up more time in the sun, without sunscreen. The naturally darker your skin the more time you can spend without burning. But listen to your skin – if it’s burning it means go find shade.

– Get sun in the morning or late afternoon. This way you will be exposed to milder rays.

– If you are really white (and or prone to burning) then expose certain parts of your body first. Feet, calves, hands and forearms, and build up from there, slowly. Think of it as a marathon – not a sprint, as we have been told, often by the sunscreen manufacturers.

– Connect to nature. For millions of years we have evolved waking with the sun and going to sleep with the moon. You are always connected to nature, it’s time to tune in and listen to the messages, not numbing and blocking them.

Epic Bars – Paleo the most paleo I’ve seen

Epic Bars… They’re paleo tasty, clean, grass fed and unofficially organic.
Awesome.

I met these guys at Expo West 2013 and again this year (2014 indeed) so grabbed them and their bars for a tasty interview! Check this!!

Epic Bars are a paleo treat, yep they’re paleo and from wild free roaming animals. 100% GrassFed.

I met the Epic bars team, (you know that already if watched the video above). They’re decent guys and girls and on a decent mission bringing a nourishing replacement for nasty other factory farmed, chemical laden protein bars.

They’re not beef jerky, Epic paleo bars are a different world to beef jerky. Incomparable.

My experience eating Paleo
I’ve chilled out a lot since my hardcore zero tolerance paleo days. Paleo can be an amazing stepping stone into actually understanding digestion and your digestive system, and for some they will stay paleo and feel awesome. And for some it will potentially save their lives, or at the very least enhance and elongate their experience and time on this planet.

But there can be some pitfalls to avoid when it comes to eating paleo.

After a couple of years of paleo (zero tolerance) I started to feel a little drag in my energy, my digestion was becoming pretty inefficient and, basically I hit a wall with ‘What they heck do i eat now?’

Traditional Chinese medicine saved me here.

Chinese medicine helped me get in touch with my spleen. More on that later. The point is important because by blindly ‘going paleo’ it’s easy to miss out on foods that are necessary to nourish our organs OR to overindulge on certain ‘paleo’ foods that should perhaps be eaten in moderation.

Back to the point of this paleo rant…
In my opinion these bars taste awesome and are very clean and the team behind them are legit. Get in!

Epic are cleaning things up around here in the protein bar world

Tea with Wu De – More than Just Tea, it’s Cha Tao

This interview was an absolute privilege. Wu De, when in the Western World, is a highly sought after Tea Master.

His ceremonies are World renowned and I had the absolute pleasure of spending a couple of hours with him drinking tea and chatting about Cha Tao (The Way of Tea).

(Notice the dozy state I am in from the tea and Wu De’s hypnotic words…)

www.globalteahut.org is the website for the centre Wu De is part of in Taiwan. They share their learnings, inviting everyone to taste the real depth that tea has to offer. It can be much more than a simple beverage.

This is a just a snippet from the hours of chatting and tea drinking we did. You will notice in this 3 minute clip that we hardly touch upon flavors or tastes because when we drink tea, we drink for a feeling first then for the taste…

(I will write more here after my siesta followed by a high mountain Oolong)

OK, that was a nice siesta, followed by a ‘high mountain oolong’ tea. So I’m fresh and wide awake!

This is the deal, tea is a delicate plant. It’s a beautiful thing (yep, beautiful!). And there are, broadly speaking 3 ways in which tea is available to us in the Western world.

1) Non-organic, ‘tea in a bag’ (always avoid).

Yes, I know most people drink this kind of tea. Well, it’s OK to drink it if you want to, of course it is, though know this – non-organic tea in a bag that is crushed to a powder (commercial english tea and especially those ‘herbal’ teas in brightly colored packets) will have been farmed, cultivated for mass production using chemical fertalizers for maximum plants and profit. Which, by the way, is a BRILLIANT business model if the focus is just profit with little care for the tree or consumer. THIS is the key part, ready; When we drink that kind of tea we also take on the chemicals used to grow it.

2) Organic ‘tea in a bag’ or Organic loose leaf.

This kind of tea is a step in the right direction. It is going to be cleaner than the non-organic tea. Opt for loose leaf organic tea over tea in a bag, especially if the tea in a bag has been crushed to a powder. When tea is in powdered form it means all the tea’s properties will be released in one or 2 steeps, as opposed to 4 or more from the loose leaf. Loose leaf tea just takes a little more effort, and is absolutely worth it.

Important note: not all loose leaf tea is created equally. A lot of loose leaf tea is also grown using chemicals and fertilizers. Look out for that jittery feeling often associated with coffee, it is very often the chemicals used which cause those feelings and not the properties of the natural plant.

3) Living tea (sometimes called wild tea).

This is the real deal… and often hard to find, because it is such a precious thing.  It is tea leaves harvested from big old trees that have been alive for hundreds of years. There is so much more to write about here, and equally there is much about tea that cannot be communicated through the written word because tea has it’s own energy, it’s ‘chi’. Exclusive behind the scenes interview with David Wolfe from the 2013 Longevity Now Conference! I drugged him with beef and made him answer questions… just kidding. These are a couple of scenes to give you a taster!

Vegans, Paleos, Vegetarians, Flexitarians… what rEATligion are you and who cares/does it matter? I’ve loved spending this weekend learning from a predominantly ‘Flexitarian’ and Vegan bunch and I’ve learned SO much.

(Interesting that at the Longevity Conference, when Tony Horton (P90X guy) asked the audience “Any Paleos here?” Guess how many people, from 2000, raised their hand? Just 1… )

David Wolfe is one of the supper forces in the vegan and superfood community around the World. It was greta fun meeting this man and spending some time with him back stage at the Longevity Now Conference in Anaheim California.

David Wolfe is perhaps one of the most well travelled and well versed people in the World on super foods and alternative health lifestyles. He continues to bring important topics to light, making us aware and conscious of certain bad eating / lifestyle habits and offers alternative ideas.

The longevity Now conference in my opinion is the honey pot of amazing, relevant and up to date information on alternative foods, super foods, alternative medicine and a great place to explore this World of alternative healing and medicine.

Whatever your opinion / way of eating is pretty sure we can all agree on this kind of thing needing exposure:
